Four Steps to Great Copywriting |

Copywriting can be a lucrative career for those who learn how to really master the art. There are many resources out there for aspiring copywriters, and many tips and tricks that can help you improve your writing. Here, I will outline four tips that I believe are of utmost importance to any successful copy.
Step 1: Before you even sit down to write, prepare. Be sure that you know what the piece is supposed to be. Is it an article or a advertisement? What is the subject? Be knowledgeable about the topic so you can give your copy credibility. Know who your audience is. You will need to connect with your audience, so know what their concerns and needs are. Know what the purpose of your copy is. Are you urging an action or trying to sell a product?
Step 2: Gather materials. Research articles, catalogues, books, advertisements, newsletters, news releases, market research, reports, videos, anything that relates to your topic or target audience. You need to knowledgeable to give the article credibility. How can you answer the questions your target audience will have while reading your copy if you don’t know what is of importance to them? This will help you anticipate their questions and thoughts. Then, you will need to be able to give facts to answer those questions.
Step 3: While writing, be human. Don’t get wrapped up in your computer and words. Ditch the thesaurus and dictionary if you are just trying to sound sophisticated. Use humor, as long as it is clean and relatable. Write the way that you talk. You don’t say, “can not,” you say “can’t.” You should use words that are easy for your audience to understand, and sentences that are clear and to the point. In other words, don’t try to impress your audience. You are trying to express a message and get a specific purpose accomplished, being an action or a sale. Step 4: Write correctly and clearly. While you don’t want the copy to be overly technical and complicated, you want the reader to be able to easily understand what you are saying. You don’t want them focusing on your poor grammar, as that will lose credibility. Subjects and verbs need to agree. If you really don’t know how to spell a word, grab a dictionary. But if there’s a simpler word you can use—do it. Modifiers need to be placed near the words they are modifying. However, don’t use too many modifiers.
